How much do you know about Gima Treatment?

What is Gima treatment?

Gima Treatment is a rayon and silk imitation treatment. In this treatment, the yarn is coated with a resin for a dry smooth texture.

The word “Gima” comes from the Japanese characters 擬(Gi)which means imitation, and 麻(Ma) which is linen. After the treatment, the yarn will have a dry touch like linen.

The type of resin

The type of Gima treatment done at MONTELUCE is done by two ways, Viscose resin and Konnyaku resin.

Konnyaku resin uses the edible Konnyaku as the source of the resin. As this process uses nature-derived materials, it is an environmental friendly option.

Disadvantages of the Gima treatment

Gima treated yarns are coated with a layer of resin, therefore will be weaker to friction. Shedding is a common phenomenon for Gima treated yarns.

When a darker color garment is washed with a lighter color, the coating may shed and attach on to the lighter color garment. After several washes, this coating will also reduce, and you will achieve a softer fabric. Compared to Viscose Gima, Konnyaku gima is said to shed less.

Please be aware of these details when using Gima treated yarns.

In our recent collection, 26SS, we released our new Konnyaku Gima yarn, QUARTET.
