Let’s explore the tubular yarn and the deknit yarn!Let’s explore the tubular yarn and the deknit yarn(unraveled yarn)!

Have you ever seen any tubular yarns? If not, think about the shoelaces on your sneakers. Except for the fashion-related stuff, actually we do use tubular yarn a lot in our daily life. Tubular yarns have a bulky appearance with light weight and relatively higher strength because of the structure. Therefore, if you are thinking of designing a low gauge knitwear, yet want to avoid getting a heavy one, tubular yarns could be a choice.

This time, let’s see how tubular yarns are being made and the process of making the deknit yarn!

The tubular yarn

Normally, 3 needles are used when producing the tubular yarns.

Here are some photos of how it works!

There’s an option to put yarn / fiber inside the tubular structure. You might get some fun color combination or elasticity or strength depending on the materials you put inside. It’s totally fine If you want to keep the yarn hollow, and you could get a light yarn.

It’s possible to combine 2 materials and decide where to put either outside the surface.

The deknit yarn(unraveled yarn)

The so-called deknit yarns were once in the condition of tubular fabric that is why I’m going to introduce the yarn here. Is the “deknit yarn” familiar to you? Don’t worry, let’s see how they are being made.

The dekint yarns have a beautiful wavy shape so that the knitwear would get a unique surface even just with the plain stitches.

To get the wavy crimps, we knit the tubular fabric first with the greige. Then, we dye the tubular fabric and the shape of the yarn will be heated during the process. Unlike other yarns, deknit yarns are stored as tubular fabric to keep the shape. Before using, we unravel the tubular fabric and wind the yarn.

Deknit yarns are so rare currently because barely no factory wants to spend such a bunch of time producing the delicate yarn!

Here are 2 types of deknit yarns recommended. Both are with fine yarn count.

MERINO DEKNIT 1/60, the wool version.
